Stuart Broad, playing his 150th Test match, was the bowler who struck, bowling a short ball from around the wicket to the left-hander.
Harris failed to make clean contact with the delivery, and tickled the ball down the leg-side before Buttler leapt to hold on with his outstretched right hand.
The wicket saw Australia fall to 4-1 inside eight overs as England’s bowlers kept things tight in the opening hour of the match: James Anderson conceded seven runs from his first five overs while Broad finished his opening spell with figures of 1-4 from four overs.
For Harris, the dismissal will amplify the noise surrounding his place in Australia’s Test XI; the opener has been dismissed for six single-figure scores in his last eight innings.
