The southpaw opener was bowled by Ben Stokes for 17 on the second morning only for replays to show that the England all-rounder had overstepped. Early in the second session Warner was handed another reprieve after he fended a delivery from Ollie Robinson straight to Rory Burns in the slips, only for Burns – who was bowled by Mitchell Starc off the first delivery of the series – to spill the chance to compound his so far miserable Test.

Warner was given another life later that session when on 60, Haseeb Hameed missed a straightforward run out chance from short leg with Warner on the turf, short of his ground without his bat in hand.

Hameed did well to gather and ball before taking aim at the stumps before realising that Warner had dropped his bat and that he had more time to steady himself before making the throw. In the end, his shy missed the stumps with both players lying on the ground in the same camera shot.
