Latest ICC rankings: R Ashwin becomes No.1 bowler, overtakes Jasprit Bumrah

Following the completion of two high-profile Test series – India v England and New Zealand v Australia, there has been a lot of movement in the latest ICC Test rankings.

R Ashwin climbs to the No.1 spot

After a stellar nine-wicket haul in his 100th Test match, R Ashwin has reclaimed his spot at the top of the ICC bowler rankings, overtaking Jasprit Bumrah, who had made the top of the list earlier during the India-England series.

This is the sixth time that Ashwin has reached the No.1 spot in ICC Test bowler rankings, having first done so in December 2015. Kuldeep Yadav, who finished with 19 wickets in the series, jumped 15 places to reach a career-best Test ranking of 16. Shoaib Bashir, meanwhile, has moved up by 11 places to 71st.

Among batters, Rohit Sharma entered the top-ten, moving up five places to reach sixth after his hundred in the Dharamshala Test. Shubman Gill also made a significant jump up to the 20th spot, his best in his career so far. While Yashasvi Jaiswal, who broke several records during the five Tests, moved up two places to eighth.

Only Don Bradman and Michael Hussey had more rating points than Jaiswal currently does after his first nine Test matches.

England’s batters had a tough time in the series, resulting in only Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow moving up (a spot each).

Josh Hazlewood and Matt Henry make significant gains

Hazlewood picked a five-for in the second NZ-AUS Test in Christchurch, helping him move up to joint No.2 in the rankings. Meanwhile, Matt Henry’s seven-for in the first innings of the Test has helped him climb six places to 12th.

Three batters who featured in the Christchurch Test have made significant improvements: Mitchell Marsh has climbed up eight places to 55th after his 80 in the second innings, while Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra have moved up six and ten places to 35th and 66th respectively after their half-centuries.

ODI rankings updates

Ireland’s Harry Tector is now fourth in ICC ODI batter rankings after an impressive show in the series against Afghanistan. The Afghan opening duo, meanwhile, have both improved their positions. Rahmanullah Gurbaz has gone from 24th to 22nd and Ibrahim Zadran has gone from 17th to 14th.

Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi has jumped 10 spots to 41st after his five wickets in two games.
