In the decider, at the SSC, an Indian makeshift opener carried his bat through the innings with 145 as the visitors made 312. An Indian fast bowler then claimed 5-54 to reduce the hosts to 47-6, but they recovered to 201.
India then became 7-3 as both Sri Lankan opening bowlers claimed four-wicket hauls, but they recovered to 274 and set Sri Lanka 386. The hosts became 107-5 before the home captain (110) and wicketkeeper (70) added 135, but an Indian off-spinner claimed 4-69, and India won by 117 runs.
This was India’s second Test series win in Sri Lanka, and the first since 1993.
