While certainly not perfect, the ICC Test batting rankings are a useful tool for comparing batsmen across eras. Run tallies and averages are all well and good, but the latter don’t tell you about the context in which the runs were made, and how tough batting conditions were, while the former will exclude players who burned bright and brief.
A cut-off of 900 helps separate the cream of the crop. It’s a mark only 32 players have breached in their careers, and includes a couple of players with only just over 2,000 career Test runs each, while excluding more than half of the 10,000 run club.
