The current form of the ICC's player ranking system was developed in 1987, and has been in use until today. The methodology was also applied to performances before 1987, in order to create a historical ranking system.
As of December 13, 2024, 78 different players have been able to claim the No.1 spot among Test batters, most of them doing so on multiple occasion.
The newest entrant came earlier this week, making him the first first-time No.1 in three years.
