For the second Test of the five-match series in India, at Visakhapatnam, England will replace Mark Wood and the injured Jack Leach with James Anderson and the uncapped Shoaib Bashir.
They make a most singular pair. Anderson, England Men’s Test cap #613, debuted in May 2003; Bashir, set to become cap #713, was born three months later.
You have to name every Test debutant for the England men’s team between Anderson and Bashir. There are 97 names. The count should have been 99, but Anthony McGrath debuted alongside Anderson, and there is also the case of Alan Jones.
Jones had played for England against the Rest of the World XI. These games were granted Test status at that point, but were subsequently stripped of that stature. Jones did not play Test cricket again, and had his cap taken away. In 2020, half a century after his only ‘Test’, the ECB awarded him with cap #696.
Good luck finding these 97 names!
