The Duleep Trophy began in 1961/62, with the aim to find an intermediate step for cricketers from the Ranji Trophy – the largest national First-class cricket tournament in the world – and Test cricket. Over the years, the tournament has undergone change of format, and overseas teams have also participated on invitation basis.
