Cricket has always had a curious relationship with the substitute. Unlike some other sports, cricket used to allow substitutes only in case of injuries – and even then the substitute was restricted to specific roles.
Concussion (and subsequently, Covid-19) substitutes changed that. Under these cases, the replacement cricketers can bat or bowl, unlike the conventional substitutes. In the 2000s, the ICC had also introduced (and discarded) the ODI Supersub, an idea that was subsequently repackaged as the Impact Player. And then, there have been the replacements – cricketers stepping in to complete an over.
