Cricket changed significantly in the 1990s. The ICC changed fundamentally as a structure. Triangular tournaments featuring floodlit matches in coloured clothing became the norm. Fielding was revolutionised. Technology was introduced to umpiring. Match referees came into being.

South Africa returned to the fray. Zimbabwe earned Test status. And Sri Lanka rose as a team.

Amidst all this, the world record individual score changed hands after 35 years. The Trinidadian who did that went on to become one of the greatest batters in the history of the sport.
