For years, the role of the Test captain was traditionally shared by batters. While sociopolitics played a part in this, the general notion was that batters make better captains.

It was not until the mid-1950s that a New Zealand all-rounder became the first to take 50 wickets in Test matches he led. Less than a decade later, an Australian was the first to cross the hundred-mark. Both men, however, were all-rounders.

Then, in the 1970s, a member of the famed Indian spin quartet also got to a hundred Test wickets as captain. In the 1980s, an English fast bowler went past fifty. Neither was good enough with the bat to be classified as all-rounders, just like the two fast bowlers – a West Indian and a Pakistani – in the 1990s.

Until June 5, 2025, 21 bowlers have taken 50 or more Test wickets in Test matches they led their sides in. Two of these – one from each of Australia and England – are active Test captains. How many can you name in five minutes?
