Roy Harper’s iconic single, “When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease”, was first released in 1975. The poignant lyrics of the song use cricket as a metaphor for death. The words had profound impact on many, including British DJ John Peel, who wanted it to be played on air after his own death.

Harper was not the only one to pen lines or compose tunes for or around cricket. Over time, cricket has found its way into music – sometimes for commercial reasons, often otherwise.
