Brendan Doggett (6-31) bowled out Queensland for 95 in the Sheffield Shield

South Australian Brendan Doggett led the rout with six wickets at the Adelaide Oval to bowl out Queensland for 95 in the final of the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield.

Queensland were bowled out for only 95 on the first day of the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield final after South Australia captain Nathan McSweeney won the toss and opted to field. Coming on first-change, Doggett led the rout with 6-31, while Nathan McAndrew got 2-22.

There was interest around Usman Khawaja, whose opting out of the last league match attracted some controversy. He fell for two runs, top-edging an attempted hook off Doggett. Captain Marnus Labuschagne fell for a duck. At 22-5, Queensland seemed headed for worse, but a few cameos (Michael Neser’s 34 was the only score more than 13) took them to 95.

This is the third-lowest total by any side in a Sheffield Shield final (the competition began in 1892/93) while batting first. The top five entries on this dubious list all belong to Queensland. They lost in the other four finals, all of which were against New South Wales.

This is also the lowest first-innings total as well as the lowest outside Sydney in a Sheffield Shield final. The previous record was 102, held by Queensland in the famous 2004/05 final against NSW at Brisbane. In that game, often rated among the best Sheffield Shield finals of all time, Queensland had NSW nine down in the fourth innings before Nathan Bracken and Stuart MacGill added 22 to clinch the title.

Queensland hit back in the ongoing game, reducing SA to 41-3, before the hosts turned things around. At the time of writing, SA were 104-4 with Alex Carey (24) and Jake Lehmann (31) at the crease.
