Watch: ‘Steaming’ Virat Kohli incensed after dismissal following controversial no-ball call

Kohli controversial no-ball wicket

Watch: Virat Kohli was dismissed in controversial fashion during today’s IPL 2024 match between KKR and RCB at Eden Gardens, bringing out an angry reaction from the former India captain.

Chasing 223, Kohli came out all guns blazing as he flicked his first ball for a boundary before pulling the fourth ball he faced for a six. From 11 off four balls, Kohli then jumped to 17 off five as he deposited Mitchell Starc into the stands.

Looking set for a big one, it all came crashing down on the first ball of the third over, bowled by Harshit Rana. An attempted slower ball didn’t land properly as it ended up being a high full toss. Kohli tried to flick it round the corner, but got a leading edge that lobbed back to the bowler.

The on-field umpires first gave it out, before referring it to the third umpire to check for a waist-high no-ball. Initial replays suggested the point of contact to be above the waist, but ball tracking showed that when extrapolated to the popping crease, the ball would have dipped down to below Kohli’s waist.

BCCI have been measuring the heights of players to judge waist-high no-balls properly. In this instance, ball-tracking showed that the ball would have been 0.92 meters above the ground at the popping crease, whereas Kohli’s waist was measured to be 1.04 meters above the ground.

As a result, the ball was deemed to be fair and Kohli was given out, much to the shock of the former RCB and India captain. Faf du Plessis was seen having an extended discussion with the umpires about the dismissal, while Kohli changed direction as he was walking back to the pavilion and had a go at the umpires on his way back. Sanjay Manjrekar, in the commentary box, said that Kohli was “just steaming”, referring to his reaction after the wicket.

Kohli made 18 off seven balls as RCB finished their powerplay with 74 runs and two wickets.
