Watch: Jonny Bairstow was run out after a deflection off Ishant Sharma’s right hand, caught out of his crease at the non-striker’s end in his first match of the 2024 IPL.

Punjab Kings had made a fast start in pursuit of Delhi Capitals’ 174-9 in Mohali. Bairstow hit Khaleel Ahmed for back-t0-back fours in the opening over of the innings, combining with Shikhar Dhawan to take 18 off the over. By the end of the third over, PBKS were 34-0 and looking ominous.

However, wickets began to fall, with Dhawan bowled by Ishant after dancing down the wicket and trying to hit another boundary. Prabhsimran Singh came out next as the impact sub, and whacked two fours off his first two balls. Bairstow was at the other end watching the drama unfold when he was caught unawares by a drive from his partner.

Ishant bowled a slower ball into the pitch which Prabhsimran charged at. Slightly surprised by the lack of pace, Prabhsimran managed to check his shot and played the ball along the ground towards the non-striker stumps. Ishant stuck his hand out towards the ball and fell to the ground. The ball rolled onto the stumps, with Bairstow putting in a desperate dive to get back in his ground.

Ishant immediately appealed, indicating that he made contact with the ball before it hit the stumps. The replay showed Ishant had indeed managed to get a finger on the ball, and that Bairstow was an inch short of his ground by the time the ball broke the wicket. “He [Bairstow] sees the funny side of it,” said Michael Clarke on commentary.

Bairstow had to return to the dugout having only faced three balls for nine runs, with Sam Curran the new batter at the crease.
