Watch: Mayank Yadav, a little-known speedster on IPL debut, created waves with a scorching spell that included the fastest delivery bowled in the tournament so far.

Along the way, he pocketed Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma, unleashing his rapid pace on the Punjab Kings lineup and keeping them under check in their chase of 200. He finished with figures of 4-0-27-3, having broken a century stand with his first scalp.

The highlight of his spell was a delivery to Shikhar Dhawan, clocked at 155.8kph – or 96.8mph – now the fastest delivery in IPL 2024. Dhawan tried to make room, but could not match the pace of the 21-year-old, with the ball whistling past him on its way to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who applauded him as soon as he received it.

Soon after, Mayank was celebrated across social media, getting plaudits and recognition for the game-changing – and extremely rapid – spell. Regularly topping 150kph, a rarity among Indian quicks, he targeted the batters’ body, also testing them with short stuff.

Dhawan was eventually dismissed for a 50-ball 70, having seen his teammates succumb to Mayank’s raw pace. Among those impressed was former Australia speedster Brett Lee, one of the quickest ever, who said that India had found “its fastest bowler”.
