Rajasthan began their season with a comfortable win against the Lucknow Super Giants at home. Pushed up to No.4, Riyan Parag made a 29-ball 43, addressing – at least temporarily – the problem of Rajasthan’s middle-order woes. Introduced as Impact Player, Nandre Burger had a reasonable IPL debut. Rajasthan’s lack of an all-rounder is likely to catch up with them at some point, but they started well.

Riyan, however, went down with flu after the first match. If he does not recover in time, Rajasthan may be prompted to include Shubham Dubey.

Delhi started off well in their tournament opener, away from home. Their strong Indian-only bowling attack enabled them to include four overseas batters: as a result, they dropped Prithvi Shaw and opened with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, raced to 54-1 by the powerplay, but the charge fizzled out against the Punjab Kings’ excellent middle-over bowling.

Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav conceded only 45 in their eight overs, but 175 was too few to defend for them. Tonight, they will be bolstered by the return of Anrich Nortje.

The outcome of that game was slightly overshadowed by Rishabh Pant’s long-awaited return to cricket. With that behind them, Delhi are likely to provide stern challenge to Rajasthan.
