Jasprit Bumrah took his second five-wicket haul in the IPL during today’s IPL 2024 match between MI and RCB at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Bumrah shines despite little help from other MI bowlers

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected field in what were helpful conditions up front for bowling. They started well, with Bumrah dismissed the current orange cap holder Virat Kohli in the third over of the innings.

However, he got little support from the other seam bowlers as Gerald Coetzee, Akash Madhwal, Roamrio Shepherd, and Hardik Pandya, all went for more than ten runs per over. Only Mohammad Nabi (seven) and Shreyas Gopal (eight) kept things relatively quiet as Bumrah worked his magic at the other end.

After conceding just a boundary in his first over, Bumrah returned for his second in the 11th over of the innings. Even as Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar were well set and looking to accelerate, they could only manage four singles of the over.

Two hat-trick chances in a game

Bumrah then returned for two overs at the death where he picked four wickets. He first dismissed du Plessis caught at long-on off a full toss (which are notoriously hard to score when they are bowled by Bumrah), before bowling a literal toe-crusher to Mahipal Lomror next ball and getting him lbw.

Saurav Chauhan faced the hat-trick ball, a low full-toss which he kept out for a single. If figures of 3-0-12-3 looked good for Bumrah, they were about to get better.

Chauhan managed three runs off the first three deliveries in the 19th over before a quick short ball got too big on him as he spliced one to short mid-wicket. Vijaykumar Vyhsak then slapped a back of length ball to mid-off to give Bumrah his second IPL five-for.

Having created a second hat-trick chance for himself in the game, Bumrah delivered close to a perfect yorker to Akash Deep, who somehow brought his bat down in time to thwart the hat-trick.

The last ball of Bumrah’s spell was smashed for a six by Dinesh Karthik, which took his figures to 5-21. Despite that, Bumrah was disappointed at having conceded the six. “Still disappointed of the last ball,” he said in the mid-innings break.

Overall, it was the joint-sixth best figures for a MI bowler in the IPL and the best figures ever by any bowler against RCB. At the Wankhede, it was the second-best spell by anyone in IPL history.
