2024: A massive year for cricket

The year is all set to be massive for cricket, with men’s and women’s T20 World Cups and the Indian Premier League kicking off today (March 22). The upcoming edition of the men’s T20 World Cup, set to get underway in June, will be the first ICC World Cup tournament to feature matches played in the US.

IPL 2024

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League begins this month. MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have five titles each as captain, have made way in the leadership role for Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, signalling the end of an era. Mitchell Starc was sold for the highest bid in the player auction, with Pat Cummins being second. Virat Kohli returns to cricket after a brief break following the birth of his second child.

Cummins will lead Sunrisers Hyderabad this year, the only non-foreign captain alongside Faf du Plessis.

T20 World Cup 2024

It’s a major year for cricket in the US, starting with the men’s T20 World Cup, set to begin about a week after the IPL. Some of cricket’s greatest stars will be in action in the 55-match competition.

England are the defending champions, but will they be able to bounce back from a dismal performance in the 50-over World Cup last year?

Host venues for the competition include Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, Broward County Stadium in Florida, and an all new purpose-built ground in New York.

Major League Cricket 2024

Just four days after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, Major League Cricket will return for its second season. After a highly successful inaugural season in 2023, won by MI New York – led by Kieron Pollard – the second season will feature high-profile international players, including Rashid Khan, Trent Boult, Heinrich Klaasen and Haris Rauf.

A busy year awaits the India team after the T20 World Cup, with series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia planned. They’ll play Bangladesh and New Zealand at home.
