From Dadabhoy Havewala to Prithvi Shaw to Prakhar Chaturvedi: Every Indian to score a 400 in organised cricket

Indians with 400 in organised cricket
by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

Prakhar Chaturvedi carried his bat with 404 not out in the 2023/24 Cooch Behar Trophy final to break Yuvraj Singh’s long-standing record.

Mumbai Under-19s made 380 after being asked to bat at the Karnataka State Association Navule Stadium in Shimoga. Opener Ayush Mhatre made 145, while Hardik Raj claimed 4-80.

In response, Prakhar Chaturvedi then outscored Mumbai on his own, carrying his bat through the Karnataka Under-19s innings of 890-8. He faced 638 balls, and hit 46 fours and three sixes.

Chaturvedi’s innings is now the highest in the final of the Cooch Behar Trophy, the Under-19s inter-state red-ball tournament in India. He went past Yuvraj Singh’s 358, set in the 1999/00 final for Punjab against Bihar. The triple hundred found significant screen time in the biopic MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.

The highest score in the history of the tournament remains Vijay Zol’s 451 not out, for Maharashtra against Assam in 2011/12. However, Chaturvedi joined the list of Indians to make a quadruple-hundred in organised cricket – a list dominated by teenagers as well as cricketers from Bombay (now Mumbai).

Indians with quadruple hundreds in organised cricket

1009 not out, Pranav Dhanawade. Shrimati Kantaben Chandulal Gandhi English School, Kalyan against Arya Gurukul Central Board of Secondary Education School, Kalyan 2015/16. While made under somewhat unfair circumstances, it remains the known score in organised cricket anywhere in the world by a 381-run margin.

578, Nehal Wadhera. Ludhiana Under-23s against Bathinda Under-23s, Ludhiana 2021/22Wadhera’s innings is the highest on this list by an Indian past his teens.

556 not out, Priyanshu Moliya. Mohinder Lal Amarnath Cricket Academy Under-14s against Yogi Cricket Academy Under-14s, Vadodara 2018/19.

546, Prithvi Shaw. Rizvi Springfield High School, Mumbai against St Francis D’Assisi School, Mumbai 2013/14. Apart from this school cricket 500, Shaw has also made a Twenty20 100, two List A cricket 200s, and a first-class 300, not to speak of a hundred on Test debut.

515, Dadabhoy Havewala. Bombay Baroda and Central India Railways against St Xavier’s College, Bombay 1933/34. Set in the Times Shield, this is one of only three quintuple-hundreds in senior cricket, and the earliest entry on this list. The other two are by Charles Eady and Brian Lara.

498, Armaan Jaffer. Rizvi Springfield High School Under-14s, Mumbai against IES Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya School Under-14s, Mumbai 2010/11.

486 not out, Sankruth Sriram. JSS International School Under-16s against Hebron School Under-16s, Ootacamund 2014/15. Made in a 40-over match, this is the highest score by an Indian and the third-highest overall in limited-overs cricket.

473, Armaan Jaffer. Rizvi Springfield High School, Mumbai against Indian Education Society’s VN Sule Guruji English Medium Secondary School, Mumbai 2012/13. Armaan Jaffer is the only one with two entries on this list.

461 not out, Alizorain Khan. Nagpur Cricket Academy against Reshimbagh Gymkhana Western Coalfield Limited Ground, Nagpur 2010/11.

451 not out, Vijay Zol. Maharashtra Under-19s against Assam Under-19s, Nasik 2011/12.

443 not out, BB Nimbalkar. Maharashtra against Kathiawar, Poona 1948/49. The only quadruple-hundred by an Indian in first-class cricket. Nimbalkar had to stop 10 short of what was then the first-class record score: the opposition conceded the match.

441, Nithish Kumar Reddy. Andhra Under-16s against Nagaland Under-16s, Rajkot 2017/18.

439, Sarfaraz Khan. Rizvi Springfield High School, Mumbai against Indian Education Society, Mumbai 2009/10. A fourth entry for Rizvi Springfield High School, including two by Armaan Jaffer.

431 not out, Sudhir Patker. Robert Money High School against JJPB High School Gymkhana Ground, Bombay 1953/54.

427 not out, Ramesh Nagdev. Hindi Vidya Bhavan against Amin High School Gymkhana Ground, Bombay 1963/64.

422, Sanjeev Jadhav. Sacred Heart Boys High School, Santacruz against Hindi Vidya Bhavan, Bombay 1985/86.

419, Vaneet Malhotra. Punjab Under-17s against Himachal Pradesh Under-17s, Delhi 1989/90.

413 not out, Pankaj Shaw. Barisha Sporting Club against Dakshin Kalikata Sansad, Kolkata 2016/17.

404 not out, Prakhar Chaturvedi. Karnataka Under-19s against Mumbai Under-19s, Shimoga 2023/24.

403 Mohinder Amarnath. DAV College, Amritsar against Baring Union Christian College, Batala, Amritsar 1971/72. Amarnath had played for India two seasons before this Guru Nanak University Tournament.

403 not out, Nandu Patil. PD Hinduja Hospital against Central Excise, Mumbai 2005/06. Patil had set his eyes on Havewala’s Times Shield record, but as with Nimbalkar, he could not go on because the opposition forfeited the match.

403 not out, Dinesh Karthik. Jolly Rovers Cricket Club against Alwarpet, Chennai 2006/07. Like Amarnath, Karthik had played for India by then.

401 not out, Nari Contractor. St Xavier’s College, Mumbai against National Medical College, Bombay 1953/54. Contractor played in this Bombay Inter-Collegiate Tournament a season after becoming the first Indian to score a hundred innings in each innings on his first-class debut. He later led India.

401 not out, Ramanpreet Ghuman. Navi Mumbai Centre against Bhayandar, Bombay 2008.

400 not out, Wasim Jaffer. Anjuman-I-Islam against Marwari Vidyalaya, Bombay 1992/93. Unlike nephew Armaan, Wasim Jaffer appears only once on this list. He opened batting in Test cricket with Karthik, who also features on this list.

400 not out, Deepak Chougule. Karnataka Under-13s against Goa Under-13s, Madras 1996/97.
