Watch: Joe Root hands over souvenir stump to Daryl Mitchell after New Zealander’s record-breaking series

Watch: Joe Root gave New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell a souvenir stump for the latter’s record-breaking individual series performance after England completed a 3-0 series win on Monday.

Mitchell had a series to remember, scoring 538 runs at an average of 107.60 with a high score of 190. Mitchell, who only had one Test hundred before the start of the series added three more centuries to his name, ending as the series’ leading run-scorer.

During the course of the tour, Mitchell also broke a number of records. He registered the fourth-most runs scored by any Kiwi batter in a bilateral Test series and the highest by a Blackcaps player since 1972. Only three New Zealand batters have made as many hundreds in a single series.

However, his efforts were in vain as England completed a 3-0 whitewash over the Black Caps. The winning moment came when Jonny Bairstow lifted a fuller delivery for a six over cow corner, helping the hosts to their first series win since January last year. Amidst all the jubilation, Root, who was the other unbeaten batter, ran to one end to uproot a stump, before handing it to Mitchell as a souvenir for his individual heroics. A classy gesture from the former England captain.
