The two sides recently contested a T20I series that Zimbabwe won 2-1 after Ryan Burl hammered 30 off 11 balls in the decider to take a low-scoring game away from Ireland. It topped off an impressive series for the 28-year-old that also saw him take seven wickets.
Gary Ballance made his T20I debut in the series after previously representing England in 23 Tests and 16 ODIs, and can be in line to play his first ODI for the country of his birth on Wednesday after being included in Zimbabwe’s squad. Ballance, 33, struggled in his previous stint in an ODI side as he passed fifty just twice for England in 15 innings, but does average close to 50 in List A cricket after a long stint at Yorkshire.
For Ireland, the series will present an important opportunity to get back to winning ways after a lean few weeks. They have won just once in T20I cricket since beating eventual champions England at the World Cup in October, and have not played an ODI since being whitewashed at home by New Zealand in July.
They will have some good memories of the format after beating the West Indies 2-1 away from home last January.
