The inaugural WPL campaign started on March 4, with considerable fanfare. The BCCI-run competition that will consist of 22 matches over a three-week period features some of the biggest names in the women’s game earning pay packets previously unseen in women’s competitions. Three players – Smriti Mandhana, Ash Gardner and Nat Sciver-Brunt – will earn fees in excess of $400,000 for their participation in the tournament.
There are five teams in the competition: Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz. The sides will be captained by Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Alyssa Healy respectively.

Like its men’s counterpart, the IPL, there is significant overseas involvement with a total of 30 players from outside India signed across the five teams. Australia, who recently won the Women’s 2023 T20 World Cup for the sixth time in eight tournaments, are the best-represented nation aside from India – they will have 12 players on show during the tournament.

Sky Sports have agreed a deal that will see them broadcast the first year of the competition. The tournament will be available to watch on Sky Sports Cricket as well as their streaming platform Sky Go.
