The Women’s Asia Cup begins on October 1 in Bangladesh, and will be played in the T20 format — here’s where you can watch the 2022 edition.
The eighth Women’s Asia Cup was scheduled to be held in 2020 in Bangladesh but was postponed to 2021 due to Covid-19. The pandemic caused a delay yet again, and now the competition will be played from October 1 to October 15, 2022, in Sylhet.
A total of seven teams will take part: Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. Bangladesh are the defending champions and they will kickstart the tournament by taking on Thailand on Saturday.
Each team will play the other side once, and the top four will then advance to the semifinal, which will be held on October 13. The final will be played two days later, on October 15.
Malaysia and UAE qualified for the tournament after reaching the final of the 2022 ACC Women’s T20 Championship. Ten sides contested in the tournament, including Bahrain, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Nepal, Oman, Qatar and Singapore. It was the first time since 2013 that the ACC Women’s Championship was held.
UAE and Malaysia had topped Group A and advanced to the semis, while Hong Kong and Nepal qualified for the top four from Group B. UAE eventually went on to win, defeating Malysia in a low-scoring thriller at the Kinrara Academy in Kuala Lumpur.
The hosts will be led by Nigar Sultana, while Winifred Duraisingam will lead Malaysia. Harmanpreet Kaur (India), Bismah Mahroof (Pakistan), Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka), Naruemol Chaiwai (Thailand) and Chaya Mughal (UAE) are the other captains.
