'What was he doing?' – Usman Khawaja scores rare 'seven' off one ball

Usman Khawaja scored a rare ‘seven’ off one ball after a fielding mishap during a 2024 One-Day Cup fixture between Victoria and Queensland today (September 27) at Citipower Centre in Melbourne.

In the second over of Queensland’s run-chase, Will Sutherland came into the attack from over the wicket. After a maiden first over, the first five balls yielded six runs, all coming off Khawaja’s bat.

The fifth ball was pitched around off stump, and Khawaja swivelled to play a pull. He got an under-edge, almost chopping the delivery onto the stumps, but the ball raced towards the boundary behind the wicket instead. Peter Handscomb, in pursuit of the moving ball, made a brilliant diving effort to pull it just before it was about to hit the ropes. It was intercepted by another Victoria fielder, who threw it to Sutherland.

In the meantime, Khawaja had already run a double before setting off for a third run. He was well out of his crease when the throw came in from the deep, as Sutherland had a shy at the stumps at the non-striker’s end. The full-blooded throw from the bowler missed the wicket by a mile, and with no one backing up the ball raced away to the fence to gift Khawaja a rare seven runs off one ball.

Khawaja went on to score a 72-ball 57 before being dismissed by Josh Brown in the 23.5 overs with Queensland at 106-2 in response to Vcitoria’s 240-7. The match went down to the wire, as the chasing side went into the last over needing 19 runs with one wicket in hand.

Michael Neser managed to hit two sixes, and in an attempt to hit a third ended up holing out for a 41-ball 49 as his side were bowled out off the penultimate ball to hand Victoria a six-run win. Todd Murphy took 3-38, while Fergus O’Neill, Peter Siddle, and Sam Elliot took two wickets each.
