Watch: Pakistan speedster Zaman Khan cleaned up in the T20 Blast for Derbyshire last night (June 16), taking four wickets against Durham in a dramatic tie.
The 21-year-old right-arm quick picked-up two of Durham’s top three at Chester-le-Street, before also claiming Ashton Turner and Luke Doneathy as his victims. His economical spell piled the pressure on Durham and made him the pick of the bowlers on display.
Zaman struck in his first over after Durham opener Michael Jones under-edged a ball that didn’t quite get up enough, the shot just carrying to Mattie McKiernan on the leg-side boundary.
Brydon Carse was next in Zaman’s sights, almost getting a freebie off the Durham all-rounder. Zaman missed his length bowling a full toss on leg stump, which Carse looked to get underneath and lift over the square boundary. However, the leverage wasn’t quite there and he too picked out McKiernan in the deep.
Zaman’s ball to Turner, however, was the pick of the lot. Bowling a rapid delivery on a length in line with leg stump, Turner gave himself room to flay the ball into the off side, but missed. Leg stump went flying out of the ground to send Turner on his way.
The last wicket was that of Doneathy who looked to belt Zaman over mid wicket, but didn’t get nearly enough timing on the shot. Haider Ali came running in from the deep to take the catch at around mid-on completing Zaman’s four-for.
While Zaman’s work was done, the rest of the match was scintillating. Durham were bowled out for 178 and Derbyshire reached 104-1 off 11 in reply. However they lost regular wickets from there and found themselves needing ten off the final over with Haider and McKiernan in the middle. Not an impossible task for their batting calibre, but a tight first five from Wayne Parnell left Haider needing a boundary off the last ball. A four to tie, six to win. He could only manage the former, giving a rare tied result.
