Watch: Yusuf Pathan was smashed for five consecutive sixes in one over by Sherfane Rutherford in the ILT20 competition, including a massive 93-metre blow down the ground.
Playing for the Dubai Capitals, Pathan had bowled well in the first three overs he had bowled in the match against the Desert Vipers, conceding 17 runs and taking the wicket of Colin Munro. However, when he came on to bowl his final over, the 16th of the match, Desert Vipers were 112-4 with Rutherford and Sam Billings at the crease.
Billings took a single off the first ball of the over before Rutherford unleashed carnage. On 15 off 16 balls, he backed away from his stumps to a floated ball from Pathan and swung hard to launch the ball well over long off and into the second tier of the stadium.
His next maximum was even bigger, taking advantage of some poor bowling from Pathan who landed the ball right in Rutherford’s slot. He swung through long-on this time sending the ball 93 metres back into the stands.
Pathan tried dragging his length back slightly on the next delivery but that yielded the same result. Rutherford targeted the same area, again backing away and slapping the ball straighter this time over Pathan’s head – clearing the advertising boards. Although he didn’t time his third shot as well as his previous two, he still managed to hit the ball over 80 metres.
Trying anything to break the roll Rutherford was on, Pathan tried changing his angle to over the wicket on his next delivery. But Rutherford switched his approach to targeting the leg-side boundary, punishing the short-pitched bowling. He changed his stance so he was almost front-on and deep in his crease, pulling the ball well over the square-leg boundary and into the bottom-tier seats.
Into the last ball of his spell, Pathan pitched the ball up fuller. But he dragged it down the leg side, allowing Rutherford to complete the fifth consecutive six with a slog-sweep over backward-square leg. It was more of a top-edge but the ball still had enough on it to go over the boundary rope and bump the total runs off the over up to 31.
Having gone into the over with figures of 1-17, Pathan emerged with his final figures reading 1-48. Rutherford went on to bring up his half-century off 23 balls before he was run out off the next delivery.
Desert Vipers posted 182-7 and reduced Dubai Capitals to 96-5 in the 14th over, in an unlikely chase.
