Watch: Will Young missed a crucial LBW referral opportunity during the fourth day’s play between India and New Zealand.

Wrongly given out lbw to Ashwin by on-field umpire Virender Sharma, Young was slow to confer with batting partner Tom Latham, only asking for a review at the very last second. But after India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane gesticulated that the timer had already run down, umpire Sharma informed Young that he had missed the window for a review and sent him on his way.

“Watch the Indian players as they know [the timer’s] got to nought, you see the captain [pointing]”, said Dominic Cork on commentary.

It seemed like Latham saw the problem as it was unfolding. “Look at Tom Latham, he realised that the timer was gone”, said Murali Kartik.

This proved to be a costly misjudgment for New Zealand, as replays showed that the ball from Ashwin, which kept very low, had turned sharply and would have missed leg stump by a considerable margin.

As a result of Young’s missed review, the Kiwis closed day four on 4-1 needing another 280 runs to chase the 284 India set them for victory. On a fifth day pitch in Kanpur against Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar, they can’t afford any more DRS mishaps.
