Virat Kohli was run out in the ongoing Australia-India Adelaide Test after a mix-up with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, triggering an Indian collapse in the final session of the first day.
The duo of Kohli and Rahane were taking India towards a positive end of the first day’s play – the former was batting on 74 while Rahane was at 41, having added 88 for the fourth wicket – but a misunderstanding saw the India captain take the route back to pavilion.
Rahane gently pushed a delivery from Nathan Lyon towards mid-off, called for a quick single and Kohli obliged. But Josh Hazlewood was quick to get around the ball, prompting Rahane to send back his captain. But it was too late by then as Lyon calmly removed the bails with Kohli stuck midway down the pitch.
Rahane, who will take over the Indian captaincy from Kohli from the next Test, seemingly lost his concentration after the run-out and could add just one more run before following his captain to the dressing room. Hanuma Vihari fell soon after as the mini-collapse saw India go from 188-3 to 233-6 by the end of day’s play.
Here’s the run-out that derailed India’s first innings after the Kohli-Rahane pair had taken them to a good position.

Remarkably, this was only the second time that Kohli had been run out in a Test match. The first time that he was caught short of the crease in a Test was in Adelaide as well.
