Watch: The SuperSport TV producers had some fun after Jason Roy was dismissed for a second-ball duck in England’s first T20I against South Africa, immediately cutting to footage of a group of waterfowl on the field of play in apparent reference to the Englishman’s lowly score.
While the birds were geese, rather than ducks, the joke was clear enough to those in the commentary box and to those watching on at home.
The geese had already made their presence known, having to be chased from the playing area by the on-field umpires at one point. At this moment though, all, except perhaps Roy, were grateful they were there.
For his part, the opener seemed furious with himself for the soft nature of his dismissal. He nicked off cutting a non-turning ball from debutant George Linde and walked off chuntering. It didn’t take an expert lip-reader to figure out the content of what he was saying.
Roy’s failure continued a run of iffy form in England colours. Since the start of the English summer, he has scored just 49 runs in seven innings. However going further back his record in T20I cricket is excellent. His last 10 innings have seen him score 363 runs at a strike-rate of 172.03, including three half-centuries.
