Watch: Anrich Nortje smashed Tim David’s middle stump in the SA20, bowling two consecutive deliveries above 150kph.
The South African paceman was bowling his third over for Pretoria Capitals at Centurion, after they had put MI Cape Town into bat. He had already picked up the wicket of Dewald Brevis after the teenage sensation had a wild swing at a short ball with a review showing a fine outside edge through to the keeper.
Bowling with serious pace, when Nortje came back on to bowl to David he was quickly up into the 150kph territory. David looked uneasy against the rockets he was met with and had only managed to pick up a single from the two balls he had faced in the over – neither delivery finding the middle of the bat.
With the fifth ball of the over up to 155kph (96mph), David had one ball to see out before Nortje would most likely be taken out of the attack, saved for the death overs. However, instead of seeing out the delivery, the Australian batter backed away from his wicket exposing all three stumps and moving far outside leg attempting to hit the ball through the off side.
Nortje fired in a fast and straight full toss which smashed into middle stump, David getting nowhere near the delivery. “Too quick, couldn’t catch up with it,” said Pommie Mbangwa on commentary.
That wicket left MI Cape Town 112-5 at the end of the 13th over, and the hopes they had of putting on a big total on a receptive pitch fast diminishing. Things went from bad to worse as George Linde was dismissed by Jimmy Neesham in the following over. Duan Jansen was the next to go, run out after a mix-up with Sam Curran left him stranded in the middle of the pitch. Curran himself was out three balls later after skying a delivery from Neesham.
Nortje’s final over went for eight runs and he finished with figures of 2-37. MI Cape Town were bowled out for 159 with two balls remaining in their innings.
