Mark Butcher was one of England’s most reliable batsmen over a number of years around the turn of the century.

On the final day of the third Test of the series – one heading for a certain draw after Gary Kirsten’s second innings 275 – Butcher turned to bowling off-spin, rather than his usual seam up. With Klusener on 45, Butcher, from around the wicket, got one to drift in and turn away from the South African all-rounder, taking the top of his off stump.

You can watch the delivery from Butcher here:

He was also a handy option with the ball, delivering more than serviceable, slightly-quicker-than-medium-pace taking 15 Test wickets at just over 36, and once taking an Ashes four-for at Edgbaston.

But it wasn’t just seam bowling that gave Butcher success with the ball in Test cricket. A video unearthed by popular cricket video archivist Rob Moody – A.K.A Robelinda2 – shows Butcher dismissing Lance Klusener with a perfect off-break in a series between South Africa and England in 1999/2000.
