During the last session of the second day’s play between India and New Zealand in Kanpur, Mayank Agarwal was seen fielding on his knees around the bat.
The image of the helmeted Agarwal knelt down at so-called ‘silly gully’ evoked memories of Marcus Trescothick’s catch from the same position for Somerset in the 2017 County Championship.
On his knees and under a helmet, the then 41-year-old Trescothick showed his reactions to snaffle Middlesex’s No.3 Stevie Eskinazi off the bowling of Roelof van der Merwe. The catch was followed by wild celebrations from Trescothick and his Somerset teammates, who piled on top of him like over-excited children.
The wicket was a vital one in the context of that season’s County Championship, with Middlesex, champions in 2016, vying with Somerset to avoid relegation. The Seaxes began well by dismissing Somerset for 236, but three quick wickets on the evening of the first day – with Eskinazi’s the last – tilted the momentum back the way of the hosts, and the eventually won by 231 runs.
South African-born Eskinazi simply looked on in disbelief, seemingly unable to comprehend what had just happened.
