During India’s famous victory against Pakistan at the MCG last Sunday, Virat Kohli hit an “impossible” six off Haris Rauf, garnering plenty of praise for the unbelievable hit. Five years ago, he hit a shot that could be considered by many to be just as good.
The world came to a standstill on October 23, when India and Pakistan played out a thriller in front of more than 90,000 people at the MCG and Virat Kohli almost single-handedly took India across the finish line with a remarkable innings of 82 not out off 53 balls. In particular, his six off Haris Rauf down the ground was the moment which made over a billion jaws across the world drop to the floor.
Back in 2017, in the first ODI of a three-match series between India and England at Pune, Kohli played one of his trademark white-ball innings in a chase, scoring 122 off 105 balls as India successfully hunted down 350 to win by seven wickets. It contained a shot that was, in its own ways, a ridiculous hit.
Kohli, who had brought up his century just four balls earlier, received a slightly back-of-a-length delivery from Chris Woakes, and somehow managed to short-arm jab the ball over long-on for six. There is no doubt that the occasion where he played the shot didn’t come close to comparing to his shot at the MCG, but the bending of physics did.
