Joe Root unleashed a reverse-reverse late-cut against Sri Lanka in the second Test at Galle, a piece of improvisation that his limited overs-skipper Eoin Morgan had shown us more than a decade ago.
Root was batting on 137 when he went for a reverse sweep against Sri Lanka off-spinner Dilruwan Perera. He had pulled off a similar shot earlier in the Test, a half-switch hit in which he reversed his feet but not his hands before clubbing over the off- or leg-side, depending on your perspective.
On this occasion, the bowler followed Root’s movement, firing the ball down the leg-side, but the England captain pulled off a great improvisation act to keep the ball away from his stumps.
Back in 2008, Eoin Morgan had pulled off something similar while playing for Middlesex against Kent, the difference being he went for a paddle-sweep instead of the cut, and some immediately referenced the similarities.
