Watch: A young Jasprit Bumrah proved he could star with the bat too, once scoring a fiery 24-ball 42 for his state team Gujarat during a domestic one-day tournament in 2016/17.
Bumrah, who is renowned for his quick-bowling abilities, has recently impressed with his useful lower-order batting, chipping in with crucial runs during the ongoing England-India Test series. Batting usually in the bottom two slots though, Bumrah is yet to cross an average of 10 in any of the international formats.
While chatting with Jasprit Bumrah last year on an Instagram Live session, former India batsman Yuvraj Singh steered the conversation towards Bumrah’s batting credentials (or the lack thereof).
The pacer responded playfully, “Yuvi Paa, I bat too low down the order. Plus, if India do need my assistance with the bat, it means that we are struggling. Because we are doing so well in the last three-four years, I am not needed.”
However, Yuvraj stuck to the point, “Your highest score in One Day cricket is 16, in IPL it is 10, and in Tests it is 16. In 80 first-class games, you have 82 runs. This is an exceptional batting record. At least, score a fifty man.”
Jasprit Bumrah then reminded Yuvraj of his 42 from No.9 against Goa in the 2016/17 Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture, which helped his side to a healthy score of 277. His knock included three sixes and four fours, with Bumrah donning an unusually aggressive avatar. Later he posted snippets of his innings on social media. The knock is still his highest score in List A cricket.
In the ongoing Test series against England, Jasprit Bumrah has made useful contributions with the willow, and has currently scored 87 runs at an average of 17.4.
