After the euphoric heights of their miraculous final day victory at Lord’s, India came crashing back down to earth on a humbling open day at Headingley.

The day went downhill for India from the moment Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. KL Rahul fell to James Anderson in the opening over of the Test and the tourists were soon three down after an impeccable new ball spell from the England veteran. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane crawled towards the lunch break before the latter fell to Ollie Robinson on what turned out to be the last ball of the session.

The day unravelled thereafter, with England bundling India out for just 78 – their lowest score in England since 1952. England’s under-fire opening pair of Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns then proved that there were no demons in the pitch as they took England to the close on 120-0, putting on England’s highest opening stand since the former’s debut in Rajkot in 2016.

Despite a galling day for India, fiery seamer Mohammad Siraj still found time for a humourous moment with a boisterous Headingley crowd. Late in the final session with England in complete control of the Test, Siraj turned back to the crowd gesturing the series scoreline of 1-0 to the predominantly English support.
