Asia Lions skipper Shahid Afridi went up to check on Gautam Gambhir after the India Maharajas captain was hit on his helmet by a top edge during the 2023 Legends League Cricket opener.

In the 12th over of Maharajas’ innings, Gambhir tried a cheeky scoop of Abdul Razzaq, but only managed to top-edge it onto his helmet. The ball crashed into his helmet grille, but Gambhir was fine enough to exchange ends, even as Razzaq went up in appeal, probably suspecting a leg-before possibility.

Afridi, though, walked up to Gambhir and quickly checked if his opposite number was fine. He got a little salute of acknowledgement from Gambhir before the two went their ways. The sight was enough to set social media abuzz.

Afridi and Gambhir, long-time rivals on the field, have had a rather turbulent history with each other. The earliest instance dates back to 2007, when the two engaged in a rather ugly mid-pitch altercation, and seemed to have been at loggerheads since.

In his autobiography, Afridi had controversially written that Gambhir had “no personality” and had “an attitude problem”. In 2019, Gambhir targeted a tweet at Afridi, crudely claiming that he would “take you to a psychiatrist”. The two have been involved in multiple Twitter run-ins since.

The latest episode, though, seems to suggest that things have eased up between the two.
