India and Pakistan face each other in an ODI for the first time in over four years in the 2023 Asia Cup, with India electing to bat first. Rohit and Shubman Gill came out to open the innings, with Shaheen Shah Afridi bowling the first over with Rohit to face.
The first ball was full and dug out for a dot by the India captain. The second was slightly shorter and wide of leg stump, with Rohit able to clip off his pads to the boundary. There was some danger in the shot, however, with the ball airborne inside the inner ring. It flew to Fakhar at square-leg, who was able to just get a hand to it diving full length through the air.
But the catch didn’t stick, and it would have been nearly impossible for Fakhar to hold on to the catch. The ball deflected off his hand and carried on to the rope to get India underway with a boundary.
Shaheen had the last laugh, however, coming back after a brief rain delay and bowling Rohit with the fourth ball after the players came back onto the pitch. He bowled three dots which challenged Rohit with seam movement, before taking out his off-stump with a beauty. Shaheen also struck in his next over to get rid of Virat Kohli for a seven-ball four, and put Pakistan well on top in the powerplay.
