Watch: Sean Abbott blasted the joint-fastest century in T20 Blast history, equalling Andrew Symonds’ 34-ball ton from 2004 on his way to his career-best T20 score for Surrey against Kent.
The unbeaten 110 from No.6 carried Surrey to 223-5, the only batter other than No.7 Jordan Clark to go past 20. The two put on a 129-run stand from 94-5, taking just 46 balls.
It was just his second century in domestic cricket: known more for his fast bowling, Abbott had a previous best of 41 in 76 T20s. In List A matches, he has one fifty, but has a much better batting record in first-class cricket – one century and 14 fifties.
In response, Kent’s opening pair of Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond put on a 108-run stand, but a middle-order collapse meant that they finished with 182-7.
It was a six-hitting clinic from Abbott: only four were hit to the fence while 11 were smashed over them with the bulk of his scoring coming from the leg side.
“I don’t think people should be thinking about me and ‘Roy’ in the same breath,” Abbott said after the innings. “But it was a lot of fun. Batting records could not be further from my radar. I was just grateful to find the middle of the bat.”
