The catch came in the fourth over of Durban Super Giants’ innings when Breetzke swiped at a short delivery from Nandre Burger. The ball pinged off his bat and flew quickly into the leg side, looking destined for the boundary. But Shepherd, who was fielding on the ring at mid-wicket, leapt into the air and stretched his right hand high above his head. He plucked the ball out of the air with one hand before falling to the ground.
He got up and threw the ball into the air in celebration, with his teammates in shock around him that he’d been able to take the catch. The wicket was the second to fall for Durban Super Giants’ in as many overs, with Breetzke departing for 13 off nine balls to leave the side 21-2.
By the end of the following over they were another wicket down after JJ Smuts was dismissed lbw by Lizaad Williams, before they slipped to 34-4 in the seventh over of the innings.
Super Giants are currently two wins from two in the competition, having scored 225-3 in their previous match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
