Rohit Sharma, India’s vice-captain came in to complete Navdeep Saini’s over, after the right-arm quick walked off the field due to injury on Day 1 of the Brisbane Test.
Rohit, who has an IPL hat-trick to his name, came in to bowl the one ball left in Saini’s over after Marnus Labuschagne was dropped by skipper Ajinkya Rahane at gully.
This was the first time Rohit was bowling in an away Test match since 2014. Incidentally, the previous instance also came at the Gabba in 2014. Then Rohit bowled two wicketless overs as India’s fifth bowler.
Having bowled off-breaks through his Test career – Gary Ballance at The Rose Bowl and Mitchell Marsh at the Adelaide Oval, both in 2014, being his two Test victims – Rohit opted to go for gentle seam up against Labuschagne, which was neatly played for a single down to the sweeper cover.
