Ashwin given a Mankad warning on Sunday

India spinner R Ashwin was given a warning by the bowler for leaving his crease too early at the non-striker's end during a Tamil Nadu Premier League match.

On Sunday (July 28), Ashwin was playing for Dindigul Dragons against Nellai Royal Kings in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Having been put in to bat, the team lost opener Vimal Khumar in the first over before slipping to 50-3 and 69-4.

Ashwin walked out to the middle at 96-6 in 14th over, after the fall of Varun Chakaravarthy's wicket. In the 15th over, left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath came on to bowl, with Shivam Singh on strike and Ashwin at the non-striker's end.

As Prasath came in to bowl, he pulled out of his action just before the delivery stride, forcing Ashwin, who had been drifting out of his crease in an attempt to get a headstart, to hurriedly turn around and make sure his bat was in the crease. Prasath shot a look at Ashwin before heading back to his bowling mark, seemingly telling the umpire he had pulled out because the non-striker had started to leave his ground.

The incident drew laughs from commentators and spectators alike. Ashwin has been one of the most vocal players in support of bowlers attempting to 'Mankad' batters, i.e., run the non-striker out if they leave the crease before the bowler delivers the ball.

The Laws of Cricket do not require bowlers to warn non-strikers before taking off the bails. Ashwin himself has both run players out, as well as warned them throughout his career. Replays showed that in this case, if Prasath had broken the stumps, Ashwin would have been out of his ground.

On Sunday, it was amusing to see the shoe on the other foot for once.
