Watch: Cheteshwar Pujara survived a close DRS review on the fifth day in Brisbane after bat-padding Nathan Lyon, being adjudged not out despite ball tracker showing that the delivery would have gone on to hit the stumps.
The incident took place on the final ball of the 18th over, 21 runs into the partnership between Pujara and Shubman Gill. Lyon, who had picked up just the one wicket in the first innings, looked keen to contribute more in the second as he approached the coveted 400-Test wickets mark.
The off-spinner pitched the ball just short of good length, turning it into the right-hander. Pujara, who had walked down the pitch, was struck on the front pad. A loud appeal from Lyon, Tim Paine and the slip cordon followed.
After the on-field umpire turned down the appeal, the hosts opted for a review. Third umpire Paul Reiffel, however, felt that Pujara had not offered a shot. According to the ball tracker, the trajectory of the ball showed it to be clipping the leg stump but it was adjudged an umpire’s call, as the centre of the ball, on impact, was outside the ‘wicket zone’. Lyon, visibly upset with the decision, was seen having a word or two with the on-field umpire later.
