Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Sussex scored 240-7 in their allotted 45 overs on the back of a superlative hundred by Cheteshwar Pujara.

Coming in at No.3 in the sixth over, Pujara anchored the Sussex innings despite having little support from the other end. The next-highest scorer, James Cole, made 29 off 31 balls at No.4. Jack White was the pick of the bowlers for the Northants, with figures of 3-29 from his nine overs.

In response, Shaw and Emilio Gay came out to open for the Northants. Shaw started in his trademark aggressive fashion, hitting four boundaries in his first 16 deliveries and racing to 26 before he played one shot too many and was dismissed by Scottish left-arm seamer Currie.

Bowling from over the wicket, Currie bowled a length ball well outside off stump which Shaw tried to force through the off side on the front foot. He only managed an inside edge, however, and chopped the ball onto his stumps to hand Sussex their first wicket.

This was Shaw’s second outing with the Northants in the One-Day Cup. In his previous game, he was bounced out by Dutch bowler Paul van Meekeren, who bowled a well-directed short ball aimed at Shaw’s head. Shaw missed the pull and lost his balance to fall onto his stumps and was dismissed hit wicket for 34 off 35 balls.

In the end, Northamptonshire won the game by three wickets, with almost everyone contributing with the bat. Tom Taylor and Justin Broad stitched an unbeaten 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket to see them to victory.
