Watch: A delivery from Washington Sundar to Joe Root sprung off the pitch on day two of the first Test between England and India, sparking discussions of uneven bounce on the surface in the Chennai.
For the second consecutive day, Root kept India’s bowlers at bay, crossing 150 for the third Test in a row. Throughout the innings, there was little that seemed to bother him, as he adroitly handled India’s spin attack by reaching out to deliveries, or using the depth of his crease and rocking back during his innings.
Root had spent over 267 deliveries in the middle when he was suddenly delivered a surprise package.
Off the fourth delivery of the 115th over, all-rounder Washington Sundar’s innocuous off-spin managed to gain an unusual amount of bounce, jumping off good length and rapping Root on the gloves.
The England captain, who did well to keep the bobbing delivery down, let out a big smile, while his opposite number, Virat Kohli, seemed amazed by the activity on the pitch on day two of the series.
The delivery did little to break Root’s concentration though as he went about his run-making in relentless fashion.
