Mirza Baig had a painful, unfortunate end to his innings in the National T20 Cup today (December 2), injuring his hamstring as he played a pull shot and collapsing onto his own stumps.
The 24-year-old, who made his Pakistan debut in October, had to walk back for 38 off 29 following the somewhat farcical dismissal, leaving Sialkot Region on 70-3 in their game against Abbottabad Region.
The incident came in the 12th over, with Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah bowling. Baig went back to play a heave into the leg-side, but as he made connection, he collapsed, dropping his bat and grabbing his leg in pain.
Having already stepped backwards to play the stroke, Baig was unable to avoid crashing into his own stumps. He then required medical assistance so that he could leave the field.
Baig has played three T20Is for Pakistan, all in the recent Asian Games, in which the Asian teams who had qualified for the 2023 World Cup fielded second-string sides due to a scheduling clash. Pakistan finished in fourth place, beaten by Bangladesh in the bronze-medal match. He represents Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.
Batting while suffering from muscular complaints has been a theme of recent weeks, with both Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell making stellar hundreds while struggling with cramp. Baig was unable to negotiate his ailment as successfully.
