Watch: In a 2019 T20 Cup match at the Moin Khan Academy in Karachi, a bowler for the State Bank of Pakistan side (SBP) served up a strong contender for the worst wicket-taking delivery in the history of cricket.
Mohammad Ilyas was the bowler and Zain Abbas the unfortunate batter who fell for the pie-ball. With the batting side 22-1 in the fourth over, Ilyas dragged a delivery way down the leg-side. It was so far wide that it threatened to land outside the cut-strip.
Clearly thinking if he could get a tickle on it the ball could fly down to the fine-leg boundary, Abbas had a one handed swing at the ball. But, disaster struck as the ball made contact with the back of his bat as it twisted in his right hand.
It ballooned up behind him, and looped up to the keeper for an easy catch. Seemingly disbelieving of his luck, the keeper threw the ball up in the air in celebration before running in to high five Ilyas.
Now four years later, the delivery has cropped up again on social media with New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham having been left impressed. He tweeted: “Legitimately could be the worst ball in cricket history to ever get a wicket. Impressive.”
While it’s probably not a record Ilyas would like to have, the score’s on the board and a wicket’s a wicket – doesn’t matter how you get them.
As for Abbas, a moment of misjudgement will forever haunt him when the dismissal inevitably periodically does the social media rounds.
