Watch: New Zealand batter Will Young smashed five sixes in one over in the Super Smash T20 League before he was caught on the boundary going for a sixth.
Batting for Central Stags in New Zealand’s T20 League, Young carted Auckland Aces’ Louis Delport for five consecutive sixes in one over, including two which sailed out of the ground.
Starting his assault on ball one, he advanced down the track to the left-arm finger spinner and smashed the ball high over the long-on boundary into the stadium infrastructure. He following up the next ball hitting towards the same area, not getting quite as much on the shot as the previous delivery and just evading the diving fielder on the rope, the ball narrowly landing over the boundary line.
There was no danger of a catch with the next one, however, as Young swung through the line getting a superb connection with the ball to send it flying down the ground and over the top of the stadium. He repeated the feat off Delport’s fourth delivery, hitting over almost exactly the same part of the ground to send another ball out of the ground.
Looking increasingly ominous that he could repeat the feats of Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard to name a couple, Young sent his final consecutive six of the over into the air on the off side, flaying a full delivery from Delport over the deep cover boundary.
Gunning for a full set of maximums from the over, Young’s eyes would have lit up when Delport bowled a drag-down delivery short on the leg side. He tried to pull the ball behind square to complete the set, but couldn’t get enough on the ball and it fell easily into Danru Ferns’ hands at deep backward square.
Young finished his innings on 67 from 27, as the Stags posted 108-2 in 9.2 overs before rain came and washed out any further chances of play. Delport’s over to Young was his only of the match, which Stags won by 29 runs on the DLS method.
