Watch: Mohammad Rizwan, who was a substitute fielder during Sussex’s tour game against New Zealand, helped dismiss Hamish Rutherford with a brilliant running catch in the outfield on Saturday.
The Kiwis will play a three-match Test series against England from June 2, with two warm-ups scheduled ahead of the tour. While the first warm-up match is currently ongoing against Sussex, having begun on May 21 after a washed-out first day, the second tour game will be against County Select XI in Chelmsford from May 26.
The first game saw a moment of spark from Pakistan’s Rizwan, who was not a part of the original squad due to a bereavement in his family. Oli Carter was picked as the Sussex wicketkeeper for the game. Rizwan, however, was called in as a substitute fielder and displayed his fielding skills. Rutherford came down the track for a big hoick off the bowling of Delray Rawlins but skied over mid-off, where Rizwan ran backwards and dived full stretch to hold onto a sensational catch.
Otherwise, the day was a successful one for the tourists. Four batters – Tom Latham, Will Young, Michael Bracewell and Tom Blundell – made half-centuries before retiring out, with Cam Fletcher’s golden duck the only failure by a New Zealander.
